INU – Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un met earlier this month to discuss North Korea giving up its nuclear programme in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions, but many global security pundits remain confused about why Kim agreed to the meeting. After all, North Korea has never been interested in a relationship with the West.

The answer may be that Trump’s tough tactics have worked and forced North Korea to come on side, which is why the US National Security team is using the same tactics to deal with the Iranian Regime’s nuclear programme.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made a list of 12 demands that Iran must meet before the US will agree a new nuclear deal with them, including ending its export of terrorism and domestic repression.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei wants to keep his dictatorship going, but if he does not accept and implement all of the changes, then his Regime will certainly fall. Khamenei knows this, which can be seen clearly in the demands that he has made to Europe. He told them that if Iran was to stay in the 2015 nuclear deal, then the EU should vow to not seek negotiations on the Regime’s regional meddling.

But the so-called moderate President Hassan Rouhani dismissed all hope for new negotiations on Friday, by painting that the US as the aggressor in the Middle East and Iran as the maligned victim. And this highlights the difference between Iran and North Korea and why the Regime will never be able to do a deal with the West and stick to it.

North Korea has many problems that we should not ignore, but it does not seek to destabilise its neighbours and take power. For Iran, that is at the heart of their constitution. Trump’s deal with Kim does not threaten the North Korea dictatorship, but his demands on Iran will undermine the foundation on which the Mullahs’ Regime is built.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) will never pull their troops or proxies out of other countries through diplomacy. The only way to stop Iranian interference in its neighbouring states is through expelling the IRGC and the Regime as a whole from the Middle East.

But more importantly, a meeting between Khamenei and Trump will fail because the Iranian Regime is despised by its own people – who are currently taking part in a months’ long uprising against the Regime – and no one can or should help to secure a Regime that is despised by its people.

The Iranian people’s organized opposition, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), will tackle the topics of ongoing protest and regime change at their Free Iran gathering in Paris on 30 June.

Hamid Bahrami, a former political prisoner from Iran, wrote: “As history teaches us, the US administration should not waste time to hear anything from theocracy. Instead, both Arab states and President Trump should pay close attention to the message out of NCRI’s gathering in Iran, which will echo the real voices of Iranians.”

♦️All charges against labor rights activists including ‘national security’ charges must be dropped!
♦️The terror and violence against workers and their families must stop!
♦️Workers in Iran should be able to freely exercise their fundamental rights to organize, set up their own organisations, and take part in rallies, assemblies and protests, and to take part in strike action!
